Victor Nian – President

Dr. Victor Nian holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering and Bachelor in Electrical Engineering with a minor in Management of Technology, all from the National University of Singapore. His doctoral dissertation focused on life cycle analysis and nuclear power. His primary research interests include progress in nuclear power technologies, the environmental and economic performance of nuclear power, the safety and security of reactor operations, and preparedness for severe radiological emergency. At the Energy Studies Institute (ESI), his work encompasses energy systems modelling, energy efficiency studies, alternative energy/carbon pathways and policies for incentivizing new energy technologies. Given his technical background, he is also interested in topics such as managing innovation, technology roadmapping and the global evolution of smarter cities.
Prior to joining the ESI, Victor was involved in business development in usability and ergonomics as well as intellectual property management at Nanyang Technological University. He was also an electrical design engineer at Toshiba for point-of-sale computer systems, and worked with consulting businesses in developing energy modelling software for efficiency improvement and decarbonization. As for community service, since 2007, he has been serving in the Engineering Alumni Singapore (EAS) which is the official alumni association of the Faculty of Engineering at NUS and was elected Vice President for the 2014/2015 academic year.
